Aid is pouring into the devastated country from almost every corner of the world. Orphaned children are being rescued and welcomed into loving homes. All the talk is rebuilding, rebuilding.
This is all well and good except that eventually, we all will forget about Haiti and all the money and resources will fade away. The country will revert to it's former state of shocking poverty. It happens every time. This time, however, I have an idea on how to transform Haiti into a viable nation, with solid infrastructure and education for all.
It's simple. The United States should offer Haiti the chance to become a protectorate. This way, Haiti will have the resources and help it needs to rebuild better and more stable buildings, develop it's economy, educate it's people enough that they won't allow another dictatorship to ruin it. The United States would be able to teach Haitians better ways to use the land that won't leave it vulnerable and provide food enough for all the people. The US could help Haiti develop businesses that will bloom and provide jobs.
Once the country is stabilized enough, which could take some years, the Haitian people would be ready to become an independent nation once again and the US could introduce to the world a greater Haiti, wealthy, happy, and self-sustaining with a democratic government.
